I have 2 boxes (both 3d): a ULN-2 and a 2882. I don't currently have a way to connect my MacBook to the ULN-2 via MH Link (ie. Ethernet cable) so it's connected via USB-C. I did connect the ULN-2 to the 2882 using an ethernet cable.

When I opened the MIOConsole, I can only see the ULN-2 and not the 2882 (I expected this in the DAW software but not the MIOConsole). Clock adjustments on the ULN-2 do not change anything on the 2882 either. Does this connectivity scenario only work with MHLInk (from the computer to ULN-2)? I couldn't see anything in the documentation calling this out.

I also have a Persons Digimax FS that I connected to the ULN-2 via ADAT to have some extra inputs - Is this type of connection supported by the ULN-2?

Thanks in advance!

You will need to connect to the computer via ethernet to allow MIOConsole3d to control both boxes. You can still use USB for audio transport if you like.

You can use a USB to Gigabit Ethernet adapter to make the connection, or a TB3 dock with Gigabit ethernet.

This limitation is described on pg 21-22 of the manual.

Okay, I do have access to a TB3 dock with ethernet, I just need to get the appropriate connector for my MB (only thunderbolt 2 and USB) - I'll give that a try.
Thanks very much for confirming!

Oh - if you are on TB2 computer, the best option is the Apple TB -> GigE adapter:

or a TB2 dock (no need to use a TB3 dock)

I had to get an Apple TB2 to TB3 adapter and it appears that everything is working (ports, second monitor and ethernet). I can see the boxes in the MIOConsole and control them. Everything looks good but now I can get sound output. My software shows a signal LED but the MIOConsole shows nothing and the monitors are silent. I have everything set to MHLink network ... which I believe is correct. If I have control and visibility, it should be good, correct? OR is this a limitation on my MacBook having to use the TB3 dock?

DO you still have the USB connected? Which audio device are you using in your host (Pro Tools I surmise)?

No, I disconnected the USB C to the ULN-2 and I'm trying to get a sound out of Reason. Sound works (from Reason) if I switch to 'Built In' but not via the MHLink option. Connecting the USB C WITH the Ethernet forces the 2882 offline and does not resolve the 'no sound' issue (I think this is consistent with the documentation). The main host is Studio One Pro. It doesn't appear that I can post screenshots ...

As the documentation is not clear - does the Ethernet cable (alone) via MHLink Audio handle the audio or is just for the control layout?

Yes. MHLink with the MHLink driver will handle the audio. You can use USB as well via SCP, but you need to set MIO Console to not use the USB in this case, otherwise things get confused.

So, you have meters in your DAW, and the DAW has MHLink selected as the audio device, but you are not seeing any meters in MIOConsole3d for the host channel(s)?

Maybe it would be best to open a support ticket at https://mhsecure.com/support so our support team can help you get the routing sorted.

Thanks bj, I've done that so we'll see what they can come up with. Your synopsis is correct though!
I'll update the thread once I hear back.
Thanks again!

So support initially suspected it was the TB3 Dock, but the issue persisted when bypassed by using an Apple Ethernet adapter. Finally I've narrowed it down to the ULN2. The 2882 works fine via MHLink Audio.
So it would appear that I either just use the ULN2 via USB or not at all.

Thankfully this is now resolved and it was not a hardware issue. Support directed me to clear the prefs etc. for the MIOConsole and it now works perfectly! The console was working with the 2882 so I naturally thought it wasn't the software, but was incorrect.
Thanks for you direction with this, bj 😊
