Most people prefer to take the output of their mic pres directly into the line inputs, but the Mic inputs on the ULN-8 can also accept a line level signal. You could also move your DB25 between the Mic and Line inputs as needed, since the pinouts of the connectors are the same.

If you plug your Avalon into the Mic inputs, you would still be going through the ULN-8's pres. All you would need to do is turn down the ULN-8 mic pre gain in MIO Console.

If you want to repatch your DB25 in to the Line inputs, you will need to set your input channel in MIO Console to "Line"

I have the same problem too..
I have an external Manley micpre, TRS to metric halo uln-2. I wanna use my ULN-2 as an AD converter only.
When I used my micpre with Apogee Ad16, the micpre gain knob was on always on 60%. Now with ULN-2, my micpre knob can not pass 30% and it still overload big times.

When I plug my Manley into ULN-2 Mic(XLR) inputs, I'd still be going through the ULN-2's pres, The mic/line gain on ULN-2 is all the way down to "6" and it still overload all the time.

1. Is there anyways to use ULN-2 sometimes with AD only? Can I bypass the mic/line gain of ULN-2?

2. When using external micpre, is it better to XLR/TRS input to ULN-2? why?

3. Allen, you've mentioned "All you would need to do is turn down the ULN-8 mic pre gain in MIO Console". How do I turn down the pre gain from MIO console?

If you are connecting your mic pre to the TRS input you are connecting to the DI, which is why you are overloading the input. This is detailed on page 181 of the manual.

1. Use the insert return; this bypasses the mic input.
2. Use the XLR in or the TRS insert return. Do not use the TRS input, as it is a DI level input.
3. You cannot turn down the input gain of the ULN-2 from MIO Console.

Can someone explain exactly where the Trims should be set to get exact unity Line-Level gain on the Return inputs of a ULN-2?

It looks like about +/-30% of the travel but it would be good to know exactly how the Trim control is affecting the A-D input, as the Trim scale just says -20 to 0 with no unit markings.

Thanks for replying BJ

Where would I need to put the ULN-2 trim to see the same meter readings that I see on the +4 Line inputs of the 2882.

With the Trim at 0 the ULN-2 Return inputs are obviously much hotter than the Line Inputs of the 2882 going into the A-D.
