Bought it on the current sale going, it should arrive next Tuesday!

Coming from an apogee duet, I'm trying to wrap my head around a basic idea here, it has to do with the routing but more than that is just a basic question of using the effects. Does one do the effects first, then it gets routed into the host, or do you record into the Host, then send it back to the MH, for the plugins, then send it back to the host Daw?

I gather from the manual, it is set up (routed) from the factory to be used as an interface then any additional routing for the plugins use would be customizable through the routing? Also are there straight forward routing templates one can use to do this as well? I'm simply using it to record stereo classical guitar.

Thanks!

It is a little like the scratch-your-head-pat-your-belly thing at first but with a little practice it becomes very obvious. Here's what I know using firewire and ProTools.

Basics:
Any MIO channel with Dir.Out set to a FW channel will be available on the corresponding PT input channel.
Any PT output channel will be available on the corresponding MIO "DAW" input.

Here's how I set them up:

MIO
1. Setup mixer strips (mono or multiple) for each input coming into the MH box. To get them over to PT, set each strip's "Dir.Out" to a FW channel, which will make it available to the corresponding PT input channel.

2. Set up a stereo strip for monitoring, and add it to the Monitor Control panel. (I use DAW 17/18 as a default, so I monitor whatever comes out of PT on 17/18.)

3. Optionally set up additional mixer strips if you want to add MIO plugins to existing PT tracks. For these, set the input to "DAW xx" which will pull from the corresponding PT output, and set the output to another FW channel to send it back to PT to be recorded onto a new track.

PT
1. Set up tracks for each MIO strip that is outputting to a FW channel.

2. Set up a stereo track for your mix, which you'll also use for monitoring. Set its output to whatever corresponds to #2 above.

3. If you want to use MIO plugins while tracking, just add them to the MIO strip. To use MIO plugins while mixing, set the PT output for this track to correspond to #3 above, and make a new PT track to capture the output from that MIO strip, which will include the plugins effects.

Console-Connect or Spaces
I find putting MIO into PT tracks as an insert via console connect somewhat obscure. Here's another approach (OSX only): Set PT to run in Space 1, set MIO to run in Space 2, and let everything else run everywhere. With this you can have both screens seeing full PT *or* MIO by using Ctrl-rightarrow/Ctrl-leftarrow.

Thanks Bill, I will use this as a reference once I get the MH this week, and start to get my hands dirty.
