Hi,

I've been using iTunes a lot these past two days to learn some cover tunes, so I've been pausing and replaying sections of songs often. As of yesterday, I started noticing that iTunes will loose its connection to the MIO mixer and stop playing audio after just a few minutes of use. This happens at random times. The only way to fix the problem is to restart the computer. Once the computer has restarted, I can get a few more minutes of uninterrupted use. I've tried trouble shooting this on my own, but I can't seem to figure out what's going on.

For now, I'm going to try to log in as a different user on my Mac in the hope that the simpler settings and configuration of the Mac will make a difference.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Tom

El Capitan: 10.11.4
iTunes: 12.3.2.35
MIO Console: latest version
ULN/LIO firmware: 5.0.45

A brief update:

I logged in to my mac with a different user account which has a lot fewer applications installed (e.g., my DAW software apps are not installed in this alternate account), but it does have the latest MIO Console software running.

Still, after just a few minutes, iTunes can no longer play audio through the MIO console mixer. If I go to audio midi setup, I can switch playback to the built-in output (which immediately works), but switching to that and then back to the Metric Halo interfaces does not - I have to restart the computer.

Thanks in advance for any help.

PS - I'm looking forward to the release of 3d and USB audio - I'm sure that it will resolve issues like this!

Regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,

It turns out that you already have asked about this (back in February), and we posted an answer:

http://mhsecure.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=21444&g oto=86323&S=a74e64d35d348b8f835f390331937fc5#msg_86323

Now, since you are still encountering the problem, it is one of two things. Either you did not get the fix applied properly (which is possible), or you did something that cleared the setting. For example, resetting the PRAM on your computer will clear the setting.

In any case, please re-apply the workaround for the Mac OS X bug as follows:

From Applications/Utilites, launch Terminal.

In the Terminal type:

sudo nvram boot-args="dart=0"

and when it asks for your password, enter your password.

Then restart your Mac.

You can check to see if the fix is still applied by running the following command in Applications/Utilites/Terminal:

nvram -p | grep boot-args

If the setting is correct, you should see:

boot-args dart=0x0

or

boot-args dart=0

printed out.

Thanks BJ,

I made a new post because the behavior isn't quite the same as before since iTunes isn't becoming unstable and crashing with a spinning wheel of death (like it was). Now, it's just quietly losing communication with the MH hardware/software. If I switch to the internal audio iTunes just keeps working.

Anyway, I'll apply the patch again. Hopefully that will work.

Regards,

Tom

Thanks for offering that command to check the setting using the Terminal.

The second result, boot-args dart=O, is what I get.

I'm detailing this issue in the hope that it will make finding a solution easier.

I've applied the suggested fix via the Terminal. I checked to see that it resulted in the correct setting: it did. However, the issue with iTunes persists.

I've taken one new step: I opened a new smaller MIO console template to try to start from scratch.

I don't know if that had an effect, but I was able to use iTunes a bit longer before losing playback through the MIO mixer. (it was about 20 min)

Now, I've turned off the LIO and reassigned just the ULN-8 as the default audio playback device in Audio Midi Setup. (before I was using an aggregate device with both ULN-8 and the LIO). After quitting Audio Midi Setup, I launched iTunes - It just took iTunes about 3 minutes to launch. It does not pass audio to the MIO Console mixer.

I'll restart the computer.

Let's see what happens.

Tom

Is that before your re-applied the fix, or after?

If it is after -- keep running and see if the problem has gone away.

If was before, then you may be having a different issue that we are not aware of, in which case you should open a support ticket so we can gather some more info from you and help to diagnose the source of the problem.

One thing -- in the stuff you posted about checking the fix, it looked like you had boot-args = O (capital o) - it needs to be boot-args=0 (zero). If that's not the case, please try again with the zero.

Thanks for noticing that BJ - about the capital O instead of a zero (in the Terminal, zeros have a slash through them, and they don't here in the forum!)

I'll try the fix again right now with a real zero Smile

By the way, just running the ULN-8 and leaving the LIO off seems to work better with iTunes.

OK -- so try it again with the zero, and see if that solves it. If you are using both boxes it will definitely make the problem that the boot-args fixes worse, because the resources will be depleted twice as fast.

It looks like the settings are now correct (ie, a zero rather than an O)

I just want to thank bj for the tech support that he provides here on the forum - on a Sunday! Pretty amazing.

Anyway, the problem seems to have been solved by:

1. setting just one of the MH interfaces (the ULN-8) in Audio Midi Setup for sound output
2. running the "args" Terminal command that bj suggested and making sure to type a zero rather than a capital "O"

For the time being, I'm also not going to use an aggregate device - to see if iTunes can remain stable and maintain its connection to MIO console indefinitely.

I'll have to use a ULN/LIO aggregate once I get back to recording, sometime later this week.

Thanks again for the help, bj!

Hi,

I just wanted to post an update regarding the El Capitan fix that bj had me apply via the Terminal. Since Sunday, when I properly applied the fix, my ULN-8 has been perfectly stable in use with iTunes and has not lost its audio connection. As I mentioned previously, I've been using iTunes extensively to play back a list of cover tunes that I'm learning. Prior to the fix, the ULN-8 would stop passing iTunes audio after just a few minutes of use, requiring a system restart to reestablish the connection. Thankfully, this is no longer the case.

Thanks again to bj for helping me to apply the fix correctly.

Regards,

Tom

If you're using your computer's built-in speakers: Make sure the volume controls are not turned down. Check the control at the top of the iTunes window and check the computer's output volume (in the Sound and Audio Devices Properties control panel). Also, try playing a different audio file, CD or DVD, or try playing the file or disc on another computer or media player to isolate the problem.
