LIO-8 with 4 mic preamps - Reamping issue [message #86511] Tue, 18 April 2017 22:42 Go to next message

Hi all

I have a LIO-8 with 4 mic pres installed. My first question is, coming from a ULN-2D where you have a preamp Gain knob on the front, what is the way to adjust preamp gain on the LIO-8? Is it only the input Trim??

So onto my reamping issue:

I am using a Two Notes Torpedo Reload reamp box, and running my DI signal into my Mic input 1 on the LIO-8. Then recording this signal in the DAW, outputting it through Analog4 Line out, it gets reamped, and comes back through Analog8 Line in.

The tone I get is less than desirable (it was perfectly fine with the ULN-2D with the exact same set up). The tone is sterile and lifeless and has a high shrill quality to it. I feel this is an issue with the strength of the signal being sent to the reamp box (i.e. Analog4 Line out for me). But when I try to adjust the output Trim, it tops out at 31.5 and hardly has any gain increase.

Does anyone know what the issue could be here?

Much appreciate your assistance.

Hi, My guess is there is an impedance mismatch. Maybe you need to choose "line level" for your return channel in MIO Console.
Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom

Thanks for your reply.

My guitar goes into the DI/Reamp box first into its "inst in". It then gets sent from the back of the unit at line level, but I'm using a TRS to XLR cable. Could this be the problem - in that I should be using a TRS to TRS cable to it can return to the LIO-8 through one of its Line ins?

is this what mean?

Hi,
Yes, I think that you'll need to use the physical line in and then choose "line" within MIO console as the source for that particular channel. I think that should solve the problem. Additionally, is there a chance that you are actually using a TS to XLR? That would definitely cause a problem.
Hope that helps.
Tom

thank you....

Yes I am currently using TRS to XLR Mic in for my dry signal.

I will try TRS-TRS into Line in with Line+4 setting on MIO Console...

Sorry re-read your question...it's a TRS, not TS.

But I think the problem lies as you said with sending it to Mic in on the LIO-8 rather than physical Line in. Now to find an appropriate cable somewhere!

Just following up: did the line in solve the problem?

Hi Tom

I tried an experiment to see if the problem would still persist even if I took out the reamping chain from my setup (to simply use the loadbox output on the unit that I have. This would take out the need to go into an XLR on the back of the LIO.

However, even when taking this out, I get the same poor quality tone.

Guitar -> Tube amp -> Speaker out -> Speaker in on Loadbox -> Loadbox out -> TRS balanced Line in LIO

This suggests that the issue is not to do with going into the XLR in on the LIO initially (because the problem is still there even after I removed this component).

I'm at a loss to understand what the source of tone degradation is. But I did not have this problem with the ULN-2D.

Hi,

You mention, "TRS balanced line in LIO", but the LIO only has balanced line ins on Dsub. Did you happen to plug the TRS return into one of the 1/4" DI input jacks at the front of the LIO? If so, those jacks only accept unbalanced TS cables with signals at instrument level, and the signal degradation would be occurring there.

You should open a support ticket so we can get some sound samples and help you to determine what is going on and how to resolve it.

@Tom,

No I'm sure my connections are fine. It went into the db25 1/4" line in.

Here is what I'm hearing in my tone - the dry signal is layered underneath the actual tone of the amp which is the only thing I want to monitor. Would you agree there is no dynamics in the tone and it has a heavily compressed sound when I strum or pick hard (that to me is the DI or unamped signal characteristic). This tells me all I've got to do is find a way to get the dry signal out of the monitoring path, rather than it being a gain staging issue.

My chain is..

Gtr -> Reload DI in -> Reload DI out -> LIO interface Analog1 mic in -> DAW dry track -> LIO interface Analog4 out -> Reload reamp in -> Amp -> Reload speaker in -> Reload loadbox out -> DAW wet track -> Main monitor out

And a sample of the guitar tone I'm getting with this chain:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bzxm4IaBkL-ARXIzUjM3LVAtcE E

Evidently, the dry signal is always in series so makes to the final monitor output - can't figure out how to remove this. Please help!

Thank you
