Any ideas what's going on?

It seems to be only some online movies on Twitter, and then intermittently. The movies do play when I switch to the internal speaker.

TIA

Mac Pro 5,1 10.12.6
2882 Extended (but not the new hardware)

What browser?

Have you tried another browser?

The MHLink driver presents a lot of channels, and some browsers handle that better than others. Surprisingly, Safari seems to fare the worst...

Hi BJ, hope it's all good! It's been a long time.

Yup, Safari, in fact I have to use a different one to log in here.

I'm not using MHLink, however - this is still the magnificent 2882's second iteration.

So this is on 2d? It doesn't go out at all, or it cuts in and out?

If it doesn't go out at all, it is probably the speaker setting in AMS (Audio Midi setup). You need to go into AMS and make sure that the outputs are routed correctly for Mono, Stereo and Surround Stereo.

Yes, it's a 2D.

What happens is only with movies - "movies" - in Twitter, and only sometimes.

The AMS speaker setup seems to be right - it's the default. I don't have a surround setup, however I do have three sets of speakers being addressed through separate output pairs in Monitor Control. I'd say that's a culprit if it hadn't been working perfectly for 15 years in every other situation. Smile

(Actually I'll go farther: it's really great - I just switch speaker pairs with a key command.)

However, even though it wasn't selected in Sound Preferences, I did delete a crufty aggregate device, and right now all the "movies" I just clicked on are working! Fingers crossed...

By the way, Safari doesn't let me log into this forum - I had to use another browser.

I just got a notification that there's a new message here, but there doesn't seem to be.

However, just to update - no luck. The sound on some movies, especially on Twitter, sometimes works sometimes doesn't. It always works with the internal Mac Pro 5,1 (updated so it runs Mojave) speakers.

I can't figure out whether it's a particular format, or what's going on.

But I'm still in love with the 2882! It just works day in and out after all these years, and still sounds great.

Did you actually go through all the output speaker settings in AMS, select the channels from the popups, and hit apply? It is a weird bug in AMS. If you do that, I think it will work. But you have to do it for all the routings, not just stereo.

Thanks BJ.

I hadn't gone through them.

But am I right that all the various surround configurations should remain at their default settings, i.e. all the surrounds shouldn't be routed to 1 & 2 as if they were regular stereo?

The L/R for the Surround paths should be routed to 1+2...

Hah. An email notification about Mobjan's post showed up on my screen just after I opened Audio MIDI Setup to try and make the speaker settings stick again. Smile

It works most of the time, but I still have this issue some of the time in the latest Mojave versions.

If you are going to be getting the audio from the Apple TV over Optical, you need to set the ULN-2 to clock from the optical input; click the clock icon in the sidebar, and then select "ADAT 1-8" as the source. The ULN-2 needs to have the same clock as the source; since the ATV doesn't support external clock, you will need to slave the ULN-2 to the ATV.

If that reply is for me, I'm not trying to get it from an Apple TV over optical, I'm routing the built-in audio out the 2882.

it works fine if I send it out HDMI to the TV I use as my second monitor, with the internal speakers... it's just the MH driver that loses contact.

And I'm not blaming MH for that, because they're on to the software for the updated hardware. After all, the interface is pushing 20 years old, and it's still great.
