Analog I/O Pane vs Channel Faders [message #87495] Fri, 24 January 2020 07:59 Go to next message

Hello,

Very general question. Do I understand it correctly, that adding gain in the analog i/o pane is essentially analog gain via the analog stage of the unit, and adding gain by pushing up a fader in the mixer is digital like in my DAW?

Thanks
R

p.s
Just installed my 3d card and so far so good, keep up the great work!

Yes - that's right. The faders control the digital gains in the mixer. The knobs in the Analog I/O pane control the analog gain elements in the headamps and output drivers.

Thank you!

One small related question.

I'm considering getting a transformer driven balancing unit (well made, 90s german broadcast) to push synths and other unbalanced instruments closer to +4dbu before hitting the LIO8 A/D. It has 23db of gain before the transformer. I generally prefer analog gain to digital, but perhaps the fact that the LIO8 already has an analog gain stage on its input make this redundant? Btw, I know I can simply switch to -10dbv when recording these sources but I'm not disciplined enough to remember to switch back to +4 every time...

Will understand if you don't wish to reply as this is not a direct question about the LIO8.

Thanks again,
R

The LIO-8 has 31.5 dB of Analog gain above Line +4 nominal level.

If you are just planning on using it for gain, there really is no need. If you like the transformer balancing or any of the non-linear effects of the transformer on the signal, then by all means, have at it!
