Hello everyone. New comer on this forum.

I'm seriously considering the ULN 2 and I'd like to ask some question about monitoring.

At first, I wanted to use a dangerous source as DAC + monitor control as I thought the ULN 2 could only feed one pair of speaker.

But then reading the manual, I've seen some routing suggestion showing main speakers connected to the monitor outs and secondary to the analog outs. But I'm not sure if those outs are "replicated" or if they act as totally independent outputs.

Could I do this? :

- Have my main monitors connected to the monitor outs and thus affected by the monitor pot.

- Have my single avantone mix cube connected to Analog 1 out, which would get the same signal as the main but summed to mono through the MIO. Meaning also that it would not have a level pot but I could adjust the output level in the software, right?

- Toggle between those 2 sets by recalling snapshots with the arrow buttons on the interface (Snapshot 1 would have the main on and the secondary muted and the contrary for snapshot 2)

Anyone could enlighten me on this topic? Would be gladly appreciated as if my thoughts are right, I could then use the ULN 2 as the central piece of my studio and don't care about pre, conversion, monitoring for a while Wink

Thanks a lot

1) Yes.
2) You would need +DSP to sum to mono, but this is possible. Yes, level control would be via software.
3) Why not use the Monitor Controller? This would let you easily switch between outputs as well as give you level control for your mono speaker.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply and the good news !!!

For my third question, is your answer is that it is possible?

I understand that I can use the monitor controller software but when I have my DAW in full screen, it's handy to push on a real button to switch monitor without searching for a software window.

Toggling the preset will probably cause a dropout in audio.

You can change settings (like input and output routing) of the Monitor Controller using global key commands, or a USB HID device like a Contour Shuttle. I did a video on configuring the smaller Shuttle Express here.

That solution looks nice!!

Thanks Allen for the advices.

Any plan to upgrade the ULN 2 with the new preamps/converters of the ULN 8?

Hello Allen,

I have a question concerning the use of the contour Xpress with the ULN 2 :

I would like to have the monitor controller change source and output path at the same time by the press of 1 button on the Contour. For example, I want source 1 to always be assign to output path 1, Source 2 to output path 2, etc...

I have seen in the manual that you could change the Key commands for selecting source and output path. Could I assign the same key command to select source 1 and select output path 1 for instance? That would make me use only one button instead of two.

Now I need also to see what's happening with the Contour Xpress and Mountain Lion, apparently there are some issues...

Key commands in MIO Console have to be unique, but this is easy to accomplish in the Contour software using macros. You would create a macro so that when you push the button for your first configuration the Contour software sends the "control-option-command-1" keystroke for source one, then sends the "option-command-1" keystroke for output one. For the next button create a macro that sends "control-option-command-2" and "option-command-2".

I'm not aware of any issue with the Contour software, works fine here on 1.8.3.

Good to know everythings working on mountain lion.

About the Macro, I've seen that it is possible but not on the Xpress, only on the Pro V2 model...

You want to make this a challenge, don't you? Very Happy

The answer here is applescript. Open the attached script, edit the key codes for the proper number. Export as an application, with the the "run only" option selected. Do this for every combination you need. In the Contour software, set the button actions to "Open file or folder" and point them at the proper applescripted applications.

When you press a button, it will run the application and send the keystrokes to change the source and path of the Monitor Controller.
