I am in the course of building a home-cinema, hi-fi set-up and have been considering different D/A interfaces that can fit the bill.
My target set-up is the following:
1. Windows based HTPC, to be used for music/video playback. Will also be (probaly) used for convolution
2. A turnatable to be used as source
My intention is to use LIO-8 in the following way
1. Connect turntable to DI interface (I will probably take care of cartridge loading using some parallel resistors or I might order a modified version to support my MM cartridge)
2. Connect Windows HTPC using AES to LIO-8 so as to feed 2.0 or 5.1 sound. As said earlier, convolution will work in the PC
3. Use LIO-8 for digital RIAA, time-correction for the speakers, cross-over (bypassing the 2 front speaker cross-overs)
From what I've read, this set-up is working out. Some questions now
1. I know that there is no official anouncement or else I would have read something, but do you intend to provide a FW driver for Windows in the medium term? (say 6-12 months - this would save me 400-500$ since I won't have to get an AES card)
2. Given that i'll need 6 outputs for the main speakers, plus 4 outputs for center, sub-woofer and rear channels, could I use the can out for the rear speakers?
3. Do you expect at some point in the future to provide upgrades such as
a. additional outputs?
b. convolution as part of the dsp?

Regarding questions 1 & 3; we don't discuss unreleased products.
The answer to your second question is yes, the headphone output can drive an unbalanced line level input.

You would have to check with VMWare, but I am not aware of any virtual machine that virtualizes the FireWire hardware. Since that is a critical component to allow MIO Console to communicate with the hardware, (unless I am wrong about the virtualization of FireWire), the virtual machine is not going to work. I think you are either going to have to build a real Hackintosh or get a real mac to control the LIO. Now we have been supporting the MIO on Mac for a very long time, so really any old Mac will do. You could even use a G4 Mac Mini (which I am sure you could pick up for a very little money). You might want to start with an Intel Mac (as it is getting very hard for us to support the PPC machines at this point), but again, the oldest machines will do fine. Since Macs support screen sharing with no screen attached, you could use a VNC client on your main machine to control MIO Console running on an old, cheap MacMini as the FireWire/MIO Console server.
Probably not what you wanted to hear, but I hope that this helps and saves you from spending time and effort on something that is not likely to work.
