Hi everybody,

I am just a new user of the forum but I work since a few years with the ULN 8 (and very happy with it).

I use it with 2 different computers : a MB PRO 15" quad core (2014) and a MB air 11 (2013).
I have to consider now buying a new computer and I don't know what to think about usb c.

I don't want to buy the new 3d update because I would need it only for usb-c connection. For the rest, I get all I need.

How does it work if I would have to connect my ULN 8 to a new MB PRO (or MB 12") in usb-c?

What I think is : a cable FW400/FW800 --- FW800 to thunderbolt 2 adapter --- thunderbolt 2 to usb-c adapter

Does it really work?

And does someone use this kind of connection with a Macbook 12"?

(I like to have a very small computer to take everywhere and juste to record, and to have a more powerful one at home for post-production.)

Many thanks for your answers,

Jean-Philippe

I bought the latest MB Pro with this dock https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TB3DK13PSG/
It has besides everything else a FW800 port as well and I'm very happy with it even though it might seem expensive.
So if you are not upgrading your ULN8 to 3d this dock with a FW 800/400 cable has you covered.
I didn't try any of the adapters because in the end it might be a cumbersome and yet expensive solution.

All the best

Many thanks for your answer,

This could be a good solution. Just a bit disappointing to pay so much just because Apple change all their connectics to usb-c...

Considering the other option the would be to buy the 3d upgrade of my uln8, I am not sur to understand exactly what will offer the usb-c connection of this new rear panel.
Will it give the real speed of thunderbolt 3 and offer for example less latency etc, or is it just a usb-c connection that will allow to connect it to the new computers like the MB Pro without changing anything to the speed of the interface?

Many thanks for your answers,

Jean-Philippe

Have a look here. https://mhsecure.com/3dEarlyAccess/3dIntro.html
Everything about the 3d upgrade.
You might also subscribe to the forum https://mail.music.vt.edu/mailman/listinfo/mobileio
and find good info on the subject in the archives.
And of course you can always contact MH directly.

If you don't want to get the 3d upgrade, your options are as follows:

1) Don't upgrade your computer
2) Get a TB2->TB3 adapter with a TB2->Firewire adapter
3) Get a TB3 dock with Firewire

But according to Apple 10.14 (Mojave) will be the last version of macOS that supports MIOConsole for Firewire. So if you want to keep updating your OS 10.15 and beyond, you will have to get he 3d Card Upgrade eventually, as MIO Console 3d has been rewritten for 64-bit (which is what is required to support 10.15 and beyond).

Personally i would go for RME. stable, fast , good quality, and one thing RME interfaces do that most other manufacturers don't: they write proper windows drivers - so you can also you use RME interrfaces with a 5.1 speaker setup as a 5.1 setup under windows.

don't know if metric halo does this, but motu for example does not
