You have to connect with USB (the MIDI ports are not exported over MHLink yet). With pb7 you can connect with USB and MHLink simultaneously, and use MHLink for audio and control while using USB for MIDI.

I have come to believe that it was a fundamental misunderstanding on my part. I was trying to use the MH LIO-8 MIDI input to receive performance data from a keyboard, when I think that is not the kind of MIDI data it was intended to receive. I subsequently plugged up a separate USB MIDI interface and moved along. Never tried again.

Maybe that was my issue then; I have the LIO-8 connected to my computer over Ethernet, not USB.
But I'm now using a Motu 8-in/8-out MIDI interface, which, for MIDI, is beyond what the LIO-8 would do anyway, even if I got it working for MIDI. So no big deal on my end. Glad it's working for you!
If the problem is specifically for the built in MIDI port on the ULN-8, one possibility is that the connection between the main board and MIDI connector board may have become unseated or partially unseated. So that is worth checking.

Yeah, so that was probably my issue. Again, for me personally, no big deal at this point. I'm happy with my separate MIDI interface, and happy with the LIO-8 over Ethernet. But glad that the puzzle is solved!
