Hi,
I am testing a LIO-8 interface one of my colleagues borrowed to me and i am slowly but steadily getting acquainted with the device and its software.
So far I am very excited and planning on purchasing a metric halo interface myself.
There is one question in particular: as I have been working with RME using an ARC USB remote as a physical monitor controller, it there any way to map it or any comparable device to MIOConsole's monitor controller? I tried to find an answer myself on metric halo's homepage and the manual but might have glossed over it.
Kind regards,
Walch Maximilian

What I found out today using Bome MIDI Translator Pro are some MIDI Notes you can program to use with the mixer. I'm still not allowed to post any url here (I have a google sheet for that) so I give a short version here. Channel 1 Note 0-7 for Record Enable Channel 1-7, 8-15 for Solo, 16-23 for Mute, 24-31 for Select, 32-39 for Phase Invert, 40/41 Bank Left/Right, 42/43 Nudge Left/Right, 54-61 Monitor Source 1-8, 62-69 Monitor Destination 1-8, Note 74 Mono, Note 77 Mute, Note 78 Dim.
Maybe guys at Metric Halo could provide a full sheet?

I suggest you make a feature request via MIO COnsole help section. I'm asking for this since I bought my LIO in 2019.
The only option you have so far is emulating (or using) a Mackie Control. Unfortunately only the buttons used for Mono, Mute, Dim and Lock have LEDs on the Console and would give feedback on the status of the Monitor Section of MIO console. The volume knob is the Jog Wheel, which is imo totally useless because I don't get any visual feedback.
The Source and Outputs will be mapped to function keys on the Mackie Control that have no LEDs so you don't get any feedback.
I would love to see a simple Midi implementation with feedback or a different MCU (mackie) mapping just for the Monitor Controller where each parameter gets visual feedback. Eucon is great for the mixer, but is terrible for the monitor section.
For a start it would help to have all commands of the monitor controller in a menu section so Keyboard Maestro or Apple Script could interact with something like a stream deck...

bj wrote on Tue, 13 December 2022 13:19Re key commands: Doesn't it? I know that the Cues don't have keycommands for (most) everything, but I thought that our MC key commands were complete (maybe not for the speaker solos/mutes)
EuCon monitor support is pretty complete; it has full support for virtually all the features of the MC and it does show and set level. It may be that the EuCon devices you have used have limited MC support. Give it a try with the free Avid Control iPad/Android app.
It all depends on what you are used to... I'm used to and like to work with a monitoring section on my mixing desk or sitting on my table where I could change sources, speakers volume etc. and get a visual feedback like on every professional console. Key Commands are working fine when I want to control the Monitor Section, but they will never give feedback except in the MC window.
Regarding EuCon, unless you own a S6 the monitoring section is really not usable, since you have to go to a subpage on the Avid app. You can only have one App connected with EuCon, so you would have to keep that page open if you want to achieve the workflow I mentioned above. (and there are so many better things in the app to waste it for the Monitoring section). EuCon would also be impossible to customize, since Avid would never allow any 3rd party EuCon controller...
RME is using simple Midi learn for their TotalMix along with Key Commands.
I think having MCU already implemented it would be quite easy to make a different mapping, like Master Fader = Volume, Track Select = Source, etc. as long as they have LEDs on the MCU that can be driven. The MCU protocol is available to everyone and very simple to program with boards like the Teensy. Just add a couple of buttons and LEDs and an encoder and you have a nice Monitor Controller.
The monitoring section was a big selling point when I bought the LIO since my monitor controller is only capable of 5.1 (but I'm still using it because of the lacking remote control features)

I agree! These are the crucial points when it comes to monitor controllers. The LIO-8 is also still clearly advertised as:
The mkIV features a full featured multi-source, multi-destination surround capable (up to 7.1.4 Dolby AtmosĀ®) monitor controller with analog gain control and relay hard mutes.
Is this realy a "full featured" monitor controller which is being selled? I cannot solo/mute single speakers without reaching for the mouse, switching to the MIOConsole3d, making shure MC Window is visible, finding the right speaker and clicking on it.
mk IV supports a variety of control surfaces giving you tactile remote control over mix, monitor, and recording.
Is an App on my Tablet really a "tactile remote control" over monitor?
There are third-party companies that build great remotes for monitor controllers:
cbelectronics.co.uk/tmc1
I have asked Colin Broad. They said they would be willing to look at the MH interfaces if they could get test units. I forwarded this to MH. Since then nothing has happened. This is very disappointing.

good point!
never read those claims for the mkIV...
out of frustration I started to build an interface for my O810 subwoofer which can be controlled via RS232. That way I can mute and solo channels with a dedicated button (and can get feedback via a blinking red LED if a channel is muted!)

Hi!
for the ones still following the thread here's a little update - for the time being I am using an UAD Apollo X4 as digital monitor controller, sending and receiving signals like monitor out or the integrated talkback via the X4's 1x ADAT IO and an ADAT Edge Card.
this way I have full control over all the functions i need without the need to continously look at a digital surface.
edit: spelling is hard
