Hi,

I've been trying to contact support for over a week with no response back. I have a few questions that I am looking for answers on and if anyone here can answer them, I would be most grateful.

I have an old LIO 8 w/ 4pre's (first generation that is NOT upgraded to 2D), roughly 15 years old, that has been my workhorse on a Mac mini running on Mojave which is now at its end for me due to memory constraints, and am looking at a new Mac Studio to replace it. I know the LIO 8 will not work in a 64 bit environment and w/o USB and will render it useless for me when I upgrade.

1) Can this old LIO 8 indeed be upgraded to the 3D card now awaiting production and shipping or does the upgrades only work with a 2D unit which this is not? Or do I need to buy a new mkIV unit altogether to work on USB and 64 bit?

2) If I do buy a new Mac Studio now and a suitable A/D for it, can I connect the two computers somehow, use the new one as a DAW and the old one as a mastering and monitoring unit only, and if so, what is needed as far as special connecters for this to happen? I do not use the LIO 8 as a multi-track mobile live recording unit, I only use it for mastering and monitoring as well as for its I/O for external instruments. All tracks are recorded directly to Digital Performer for tracking and editing and with mostly Waves plugins.

3) Are there any suitable A/D's that are recommended for a new Mac Studio that will successfully connect to the first generation LIO 8 which will still be connected to the old Mac Mini until the new 3D upgrade cards are shipped, if indeed this is possible at this point? I have my own mic pre's and do not need an overly advanced A/D with its own mic pre's, just the ins and outs. 4 x 4 will do for now.

4) Can someone give a definite answer as to when the new 3D upgrade cards will be shipped to customers? It looks like this new upgrade will not ship until Q4 2022 and I cannot wait that long to buy a new Mac, hence these questions. Thanks.

All best,

Mike

Hi Mike,
what I can say is that you can easily connect two computers to the LIO-8 3D. Google "metric halo scp" you'll find a youtube video explaining it.
This way I use an older Mac Mini for metering. The LIO can send I guess 48 channels to the USB connected SCP so that you can meter lot's of stuff on a separate machine for metering. In my case 5.1 stem metering.
