The latency via the 2408 might be a little lower (but not much).

The 2408 has TDIF -- not AES I/O. So you would also need to get a format converter to convert between the TDIF and AES.

The latency differences are going to be negligible, and you can definitely do more using the Firewire. I would go that route first and see if you encounter latency problems.
