I have heard a lot about an alternative PSU for the ULN-8 and LIO-8 so I ordered one for demo purpose . Today the "Zähl zz2416" PSU arrived at our studio .
After 5+ hours intense listening with and without the original Metric Halo PSU (switching back and forth with the Zaehl PSU) we fall in love with the enhancement of the sound the Zaehl PSU can produce. The difference is audible when listening through excellent studio speakers (Klein& Hummel 300, PSI 25M). The DAC section of the ULN-8 produces a much clearer and tighter soundstage with enhancements in instrument´s and vocal´s localization . Overall it sound pretty different compared with the original PSU . More compact and accurate. Sure the orginal MH-PSU is good enought to produce great results but with the alternative PSU its getting even better; high-end-charakter.
Also we did some vocal and guitar recordings with Large Condensor mics (Gefell 930M , Mojave FET 201). Everyting seems to sound more appropriate , completly rounded. I am very much surprised how much an alternative PSU can effect the audio signal. Before today´s session I thought its just another Voodoo bullshit.
I have read that this PSUs are hand-crafted by MIchael Zähl . The man who built the mixer consoles for Conny Plank´s studio (Eurythmics, Can, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk) .
My only problem is that this 9 lb (!) PSU is very expensive. However, despite the 1k incl VAT we seriously consider to keep it . It makes the ULN sound so much better.
PS: I would be interested if BJ had a test drive with this PSU already.
